Product Versions & Licensing

Product Versions

Every server on which Microsoft Dynamics™ CRM is executed needs a server license. There are three different product versions for Microsoft Dynamics™ CRM 4.0:

the Workgroup Server Edition was especially developed for small companies and user licenses are limited to 5. The edition offers the same features like the Professional Server.

The Professional Server Edition provides a variety of functionalities and supports single-tenant deployment. The number of users is only limited by the server capacity.

The Enterprise Server Edition offers the same scope of functionalities like the Professional Edition, but supports the multi-tenant deployment. The allowed number of users is only limited by the server capacity as well.

Suitable for all server editions are Windows Server 2003 and Windows Small Business Server 2003.

Licensing

The licensing of the Workgroup Server occurs as special case. The other editions are licensed over the server/CAL model.

With Client Access Licenses (CALs) either users or devices can be licensed. The latter is especially suitable for call centers or companies with shift operation. User and decvice CALs can be combined in one installation. Furthermore, CALs can be equipped with full or limited access rights. A CAL with limited rights has only read permission (e. g. for reports).
